With a distinguished background advising clients across a range of industries and jurisdictions, Matthew brings extensive experience representing and guiding clients through high-stakes disputes under the auspices of most major institutions, including ICSID, UNCITRAL, ICC, LCIA, DIAC, and the NAI. Matt’s expertise was recognized when he was named a Future Leader in Arbitration for 2025 by Lexology Index (formerly Who’s Who Legal).

Prior to joining SPRF, Matthew served as a Senior Foreign Associate in the international arbitration practice at Houthoff, a leading Dutch law firm, where he advised on complex public, investment, and commercial law matters. His notable representations encompass:

  • Co-lead counsel in an ICC dispute for a German healthcare startup, including serving as first chair at hearing and successfully negotiating a settlement.

  • Managing a team in a USD 1.2 billion investment treaty arbitration under UNCITRAL rules involving an Eastern European state.

  • Acting as second chair in EUR 80 million NAI summary arbitration for a Dutch petrochemical subsidiary.

  • Drafting pleadings and managing document production in a USD 70 million ICC dispute for a Chinese manufacturer.

  • Coordinating pleadings and proceedings across co-counsel teams in a USD 500 million investment arbitration involving an Eastern European state.

Matt’s professional affiliations and activities also reflect his deep commitment to the arbitration community and the development of the next generation of arbitration practitioners. He is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (MCIArb) and has served as an Assistant Editor on ITA in Review, the flagship journal of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration, since 2022. He has been an active participant in the Young ICCA Mentoring Programme, serving first as a mentee and later as a group advisor. He also has extensive experience teaching and coaching law students in the participating in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court.

Matt’s arbitration expertise is complemented by experience as Associate Counsel at the Institute of International Banking Law & Practice, where he authored legal treatises on letters of credit and international banking.

Matt is admitted to practice in New York, and he holds an Advanced LL.M. (cum laude) from Leiden University in the Netherlands and a JD from George Mason University School of Law. He received his B.A. from Wake Forest University in 2007.
